Pune: PCMC Recovers Rs 30 Lakh Fine In 3 Days From Violators of Air Pollution Guidelines

Pimpri, 13th November 2023: In a proactive move against environmental offenders, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has initiated strict actions targeting builders, waste burners, and air polluters who violate air pollution control guidelines. In just three days, fines exceeding 30 lakhs have been collected as a result of these measures.

The Environment Department and Water Supply Department responded to reports of foul-smelling water in the Pawana River near Kejudevi Embankment, Thergaon. A survey was launched in the Tathawade area, revealing that a local dry cleaning company named M/s Klenfab Services L. L. P., had been discharging chemically contaminated water directly into the Pavana River without proper treatment. The water exhibited dark, bluish, and frothy characteristics. A case has been registered against the company’s owner at Wakad police station for endangering aquatic and human life through river water contamination.

Under the Swachha Bharat Abhiyan, a ‘Swachha Diwali-Shubh Diwali’ campaign, a reel competition has been launched to promote an eco-friendly and pollution-free Diwali celebration. Citizens are encouraged to use plastic responsibly, avoid pollution, and opt for eco-friendly local products. As part of the campaign, creating sustainable items from waste, such as flower rangoli, is promoted. Participants are required to post a 30-second video or reel on social media showcasing their efforts, using the hashtag #SwachhDiwali. Additionally, tagging the official handles @sbmurbangov and @pcmcindiagovin is mandatory. Thirty prizes, collectively worth Rs. 22 thousand, will be awarded to the winners.

Sanjay Kulkarni, Associate City Engineer of the Environment Department, stated, “Various places are being inspected by the Air Pollution Control Team. Legal action is being taken against those who do not implement the guidelines to prevent air pollution.”
