Pune: Pimpri-Chinchwad Moshi Housing Society Federation Requests PCMC To Eradicate Hyacinth From Rivers To Prevent Zika
Pimpri, 14th December 2022: Water hyacinth growth has expanded across the Indrayani, Mula, and Pavana rivers that flow within the boundaries of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).
To have the water hyacinth eradicated, the members of the Pimpri-Chinchwad-Moshi housing society federation submitted a letter to PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh.
“Water hyacinth has grown in great numbers over Indrayani, Pavana, and Mula rivers flowing through Pimpri Chinchwad city,” the letter claims. As a result, many mosquitoes are breeding there. Concerningly, there have been reports of Zika cases in the neighbourhood, the letter explains.
The Aedes aegypti mosquito, which breeds in freshwater, bites people and spreads the illness known as Zika. And this mosquito primarily breeds with these aquatic plants in the river currents. It is demanded that the hyacinth be removed right away from these three rivers because it is crucial to the public’s health. The letter warned that without action, the Zika virus is likely to spread extensively.
In addition, the letter claims that the factories and companies around these rivers leak chemical water into the river basin. As a result, the river water is becoming significantly more polluted. As a result, action is asked of the affected manufacturers and companies.
