Pune: Pimpri Chinchwad Police Nab Culprits Defrauding Father of Late Flight Lieutenant Kunal Barpatte
Nigdi, 5th Auguat 2023: The Pimpri Chinchwad police have arrested two individuals for allegedly deceiving Rajendra Barpatte, the father of Flight Lieutenant Kunal, who tragically lost his life in the ill-fated Indian Air Force AN-32 aircraft that disappeared over the Bay of Bengal in 2016.
The accused, through a fraudulent scheme, purportedly swindled Barpatte of a staggering Rs 39 lakh by promising assistance in acquiring land for a technical education institute in memory of his heroic son.
The Nigdi police station responded to the case, registering a First Information Report (FIR) on Thursday. The accused now face charges related to cheating and criminal breach of trust.
According to a police official, the events transpired between July 2017 and the previous month. Rajendra Barpatte, a retired scientist associated with the Central Institute of Road Transport, aimed to establish a technical and vocational education institute as a tribute to his son’s legacy.
The arrested suspects allegedly entered into a binding agreement with Barpatte, receiving a substantial sum of Rs 59 lakh. Of this amount, Rs 10 lakh was reportedly paid to the original landowner, and an additional Rs 10 lakh was designated for administrative procedures. Unfortunately, the accused failed to complete the necessary sale deed for the land, resulting in a significant loss of Rs 39 lakh for Rajendra Barpatte.
Following a meticulous investigation, the two suspects were taken into custody on Thursday.
Flight Lieutenant Kunal served as a flight navigator aboard the AN-32 aircraft during its routine flight from Chennai to Port Blair. On the morning of July 22, 2016, the aircraft vanished over the Bay of Bengal, leaving behind 29 passengers and no trace of the plane. Flt Lt Kunal, a navigating officer with the 33 Squadron of the IAF transport squadron, left an irreplaceable void in the Indian Air Force and the hearts of many.
