Zomato Delivery Boy Arrested for Attempted Extortion of Rs 10 Lakh from Pune Businessman
Pune, 5th August 2023: In a swift operation, Pune Police’s Crime Branch Unit 2 has apprehended a man who attempted to extort Rs 10 lakh from a local businessman. The accused, identified as Shrinath Yalappa Shedge (25), worked as a Zomato delivery executive. He was nabbed in his hometown of Umbare, situated in Akluj taluka of Solapur district.
The incident unfolded outside a restaurant in Koregaon Park, where the businessman from Baramati was dining. Upon leaving the eatery, he discovered an envelope affixed to his car’s windshield. Inside the envelope was a chilling threat, demanding a sum of Rs 10 lakh, with a sinister warning of harm to him and his family if the demand was not met.
Promptly, the accused made a phone call to the victim, instructing him to place the money in a tiffin and hand it over at Koregaon Park. The victim promptly reported the incident to the authorities, leading to the initiation of a parallel investigation by the Crime Branch Unit 2.
Diligent efforts by officers Gajanan Sonune and Pushpendra Chavan unveiled the whereabouts of the suspect in Akluj. Collaborating with local law enforcement, a police team successfully detained Shedge. During interrogation, he admitted to the crime, revealing that his motive was to settle a personal loan.
The case was subsequently transferred to the Koregaon Police for further inquiry. The arrest was executed under the vigilant supervision of Additional CP (Crime) Ramnath Pokale, DCP (Crime) Amol Zende, ACP Sunil Tambe, and Senior Police Inspector Nandkumar Bidwai.
The operation involved the concerted efforts of a team comprising Police Sub-Inspector Nitin Kamble, and police personnel Ujjawal Mokashi, Amol Sarde, Gajanan Sonune, Pushpendra Chavan, Uttam Taru, Sadhana Tamhane, Nikhil Jadhav, Mohsin Shaikh, and Naganath Rakh.
