Pune: Plastic Usage Increases Garbage in Pimpri-Chinchwad, PCMC Collects Rs 19 Lakh in Fines

Pimpri-Chinchwad, 4th July 2025: In a recent crackdown on plastic usage, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has collected fines amounting to Rs 19.32 lakh from 732 shopkeepers and vendors across the city. The action comes as part of the enforcement of the plastic ban that was announced on 1st July 2022.
Although action against plastic use had slowed down in the interim, the PCMC has now intensified the campaign. Shopkeepers and vendors found using or storing plastic bags were targeted during the drive. The Health Department of PCMC visited 23,200 establishments, seizing 732.89 kg of plastic. A total of 1,759 violations were recorded, leading to the collection of Rs 19,32,100 in fines.
Despite the deployment of ward-level teams by the Health and Environment Departments, the complete elimination of plastic use remains a challenge. Plastic bags are still commonly found in shops across Pimpri-Chinchwad, with some vendors reportedly charging extra for them.
Officials also noted that plastic waste is significantly contributing to garbage disposal issues in the city. Plastic bags used for vegetables, fruits, and food packaging are regularly seized during inspections. A PCMC official added, “Plastic bottles, plates, glasses, spoons, containers, straws, and cups are equally harmful to the environment and should also be avoided.”
