Pune: PMC Begins Process for Mayor and Deputy Mayor Elections
Pune, 24th January 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated the formal and technical process for the election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, alongside preparations for the first meeting of the newly elected civic body.
On Friday, January 23, the PMC municipal secretary’s office sent a letter to the Divisional Commissioner seeking directions to conduct the election process. As a result, the election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, along with the first general meeting of newly elected corporators, is expected to take place in early February, paving the way for Pune to get a new Mayor.
The reservation for the Mayor’s post was announced on Thursday, January 22, following the declaration of civic election results. The post has been reserved for the General Women category. Following this announcement, names of women corporators from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—which emerged as the largest party—have begun circulating. Discussions are currently underway within the party to finalise its candidate for the Mayor’s post.
Meanwhile, the municipal secretary’s office has formally begun the election process by coordinating with the Divisional Commissioner on the procedure for electing the Mayor and Deputy Mayor and scheduling the first meeting of the new House. The Divisional Commissioner’s office is expected to announce the date of the first PMC meeting and appoint the presiding officer shortly.
According to civic officials, the nomination process is likely to begin after January 26. The first meeting of newly elected corporators, during which the Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be elected, may be held in the first week of February.
Officials said the civic administration requires at least 15 days to complete the entire process, including acceptance and scrutiny of nomination forms, preparation of the meeting agenda, logistical arrangements, and issuance of invitations and entry passes. The administration will need to work under a tight schedule to complete the process within the limited timeframe.
This year marks the first time in Maharashtra that elections to 29 municipal corporations were held simultaneously, with results declared on the same day. To ensure uniformity and smoother administration, the Urban Development Department is expected to announce a common programme for the election of Mayors, Deputy Mayors, and first meetings of municipal corporations across the state, excluding Mumbai. This is expected to improve coordination and efficiency in civic governance.
