Pune: PMC Encourages Citizens to Create Feeding Spots for Stray Animals

Pune, 29th July 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken a proactive approach to address the welfare of stray animals in the city. In a recent circular issued to all Pune societies, the PMC has urged citizens to establish designated feeding spots for these vulnerable creatures.
Dr. Sarita Funde, Veterinary Superintendent of PMC, highlighted the importance of providing sustenance to stray animals, emphasizing that they, like all living beings, require regular access to food and water to avoid the risk of starvation and death. Dr. Funde appealed to citizens’ sense of responsibility, calling for their support in contributing to the well-being of these animals. To facilitate the feeding process and prevent potential objections from residents, the PMC plans to create marked feeding areas within societies, identified by signboards labeled “Animal Feeding Point.”
Asha Ambekar, Founder of Shashwat Foundation, commended PMC’s initiative and stressed the necessity of providing daily sustenance to stray animals. She emphasized that regular care would help prevent aggressive behavior and potential harm to humans. Ambekar also urged society residents to cooperate in safeguarding the feeding spots and related equipment, warning that any damage or disruption to the feeding bowls or facilities would be considered a non-cognizable offense under Section 425 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
PMC made it clear that any mistreatment or harm towards stray animals would not be tolerated. Engaging in illegal activities involving these animals would be met with accountability, as causing harm or killing them is a cognizable criminal offense punishable under Sections 428 or 429 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
In light of these efforts, the PMC earnestly requested all residential societies to step forward and establish integrated animal feeding spots within their premises.
