Pune, 9th April 2025: With the monsoon season approaching, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has begun planning for coordinated action across all departments to prevent flooding and ensure smooth water drainage throughout the city. As part of this pre-monsoon preparation, the civic body aims to complete the cleaning of 90 kilometers of stormwater drains and 125 rainwater channels by 7th June.

Additionally, PMC has identified 123 waterlogging hotspots in newly merged villages and plans to address 189 encroachments on drains through joint operations before the rains begin. The strategy was shared by Additional Municipal Commissioner Prithviraj BP, who recently chaired a review meeting on disaster management.

The meeting was attended by key officials including PMC Additional Commissioner MJ Pradeep Chandran, Chief Engineer of the Sewage Management Department Jagdish Khanore, Superintendent Engineer Dinkar Gojare, Disaster Management Officer Ganesh Sonune, and representatives from Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), MahaMetro, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

Department heads were instructed to complete all essential monsoon-related works without delay and to track the progress of ongoing tasks within their respective areas. To prevent waterlogging during the rainy season, 30 separate tenders have been issued for cleaning storm drains and sewer lines across all zonal offices.

In the 23 newly merged villages, where there is no dedicated rainwater drainage infrastructure, PMC has floated eight tenders specifically for nala cleaning. Based on past monsoon experiences, the civic body has prioritized cleaning of 90 kilometers of nalas and 125 rainwater channels. Furthermore, 116 spots identified for chronic water stagnation will also be cleaned.

In coordination with PMRDA, PMC will implement necessary preventive measures in these merged villages. The list of 189 encroachment sites has been prepared and will be handed over to PMRDA in the next few days, after which joint action will be taken ahead of the monsoon.
