Pune: PMC Plans CCTV Surveillance at 30 Riverbank Dumping Hotspots to Curb Illegal Dumping
Pune, 17th July 2026: In a bid to curb illegal dumping of construction debris along the Mula and Mutha riverbeds, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has planned to install a network of CCTV cameras and flood-warning beacon lights at identified dumping hotspots across the city.
PMC officials said 30 chronic locations have been identified where debris is frequently dumped despite repeated enforcement drives. The civic body plans to install 168 CCTV cameras covering stretches of both rivers within municipal limits, and complete the project within a month. The project is expected to be completed within a month.
The poles carrying the cameras will also be equipped with beacon lights to indicate rising flood levels, helping residents gauge water discharge from upstream dams and enabling authorities to alert people living in low-lying areas.
Citizen activists, however, questioned the civic administration’s ability to maintain the system, pointing out that several surveillance projects launched earlier had become ineffective due to non-functional cameras.
Residents also said enforcement, rather than merely installing cameras, would determine the success of the initiative. The project forms part of PMC’s broader effort to improve river monitoring and strengthen flood management measures during the monsoon.
