Pune, 9th March 2022: Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) water supply department recovered Rs 100 crores of arrears for water bills. Compared to last year, the amount is higher by 25 crores. The civic body has warned the government, private offices and societies to cut off the water supply if the arrears are not paid.

The Water Supply Department supplies water to residential, non-residential and industrial properties in the city. The municipal corporation provides water through a meter system where the water demand is high. The water is also supplied to Pune and Khadki Cantonment, Railways and other Central and State Government offices in the city.

However, due to technical problems with the meters in some places, there are disputes between the concerned organizations and PMC over exactly how much water bill to be filled. As a result, due to non-recovery of arrears, the amount has increased to around Rs 600 crore.

The Department has compiled a department-wise list to recover large arrears. Accordingly, the arrears are being followed up. If the arrears are not responded to then the water supply is cut off.

Last year Sassoon hospital paid Rs 1.25 crore, Railways 48 lakhs, Khadki Ammunition Factory 35 lakhs as water bill arrears. Similarly, both Pune and Khadki cantonments have also paid arrears of lakhs of rupees.

Aniruddha Pawaskar, Head of the Water Supply Department, said “Arrears of Rs 75 crore had been recovered till March 8 last year. This year, the arrears of Rs 102.62 crore have been recovered. Government offices, companies are in focus for the recovery of water bills. That amount is expected to increase by March 31.”
