Pune, 23rd November 2022: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) provides free medicines to poor patients. However, due to the mismanagement of the Health Department, dispensaries of the PMC are in shambles. As there is no fund for the purchase of new medicines, Rs 5.5 crores have been classified. However, as it takes at least 15 days for the completion of this process, the patients are struggling.

The scheme, Urban Garib Yojana for poor citizens, offers free treatment up to Rs two lakhs for municipal employees, Contributory Medical Aid Scheme for officials, Rs 20,000 per year for cardholders, and benefits one lakh citizens with five family members.

For the last 15 days, patients have been sent back saying that medicines in the medicine store at Gadikhana have run out. Due to this, patients are forced to buy medicines from private shops.

“There was a fund of Rs six crore for providing free medicines to the patients of the urban-poor scheme. Medicines will be available in 15 days. The classification process was started early, but various approvals have been delayed,” said Dr Sanjeev Wavare, Assistant Health Officer.

“Instead of increasing the funds of the scheme for the poor, it has been reduced by 40 per cent. The Commissioner should answer why this fund was reduced,” said Vivek Velankar, Chairman of Sajag Nagrik Manch.
