Pune, 14th July 2023: In response to the persistent issue of vehicles parked on roadsides and footpaths causing traffic congestion, the municipal corporation has launched a campaign to confiscate such vehicles. As of now, 22 vehicles have been seized, and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is urging citizens to remove their parked vehicles.

With the increasing number of vehicles in the city, traffic congestion has become a serious problem, further compounded by the issue of improper parking. Many residents have been leaving their abandoned vehicles on roads and footpaths, obstructing traffic and creating an unsightly and unhygienic environment.

In response to these concerns, the PMC’s Anti-Encroachment Department has initiated this campaign. The impounded vehicles can be redeemed within one month by paying a fee. The fees range from Rs 25,000 for passenger buses and trucks, Rs 20,000 for light vehicles (up to 10 tonnes), Rs 15,000 for cars and jeeps, Rs 10,000 for rickshaws and tempos, and Rs 5,000 for two-wheelers. The administration has issued a seven-day notice, urging citizens to remove their parked vehicles from the roads.

The municipality has already seized 22 vehicles since the campaign began last week. Notices have been issued to 18 of the impounded vehicles. To further escalate operations, separate cranes will be provided in each regional office starting from Monday. Madhav Jagtap, Deputy Commissioner of the Anti-Encroachment Department, emphasized the importance of immediate vehicle removal by citizens.

It is worth noting that approximately a year and a half ago, the PMC conducted a similar drive and seized around 1,200 vehicles. As these vehicles were not reclaimed within a month, they were auctioned with permission from the RTO and sold as scrap, resulting in a revenue of Rs 1.5 crore for the municipal corporation, as stated by Jagtap.
