Pune: PMC To Charge One Rupee Annual Rent For School Hall From Private Organisation, Civic Activists Oppose Move

Pune, 22 August 2021: On the one hand, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is trying to lease amenity space for 30 years to increase its income, while on the other hand, a school hall at Karvenagar will be rented for only one rupee. The organization will operate a study room from there.
This decision has been taken by Warje-Karvenagar Ward Committee. Vivek Velankar, president of Sajag Nagarik Manch, has demanded that the decision be canceled as the premises was being given to a private company while the school was being built at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore.
The land reserved for the primary school in Karvenagar was taken over by the Municipal Corporation in exchange for the transfer of development rights (TDR). After that, PMC has built a school by spending Rs 2.5 crore. The building has not received the completion certificate and the school has not even started. Meanwhile, the ward committee has decided to rent the school hall to a social organization for five years at an annual rate of one rupee.
Velankar has demanded that this resolution should be canceled as it is against the interest of PMC.
Ward Committee Chairperson Vrushali Chaudhary said, “Although the resolution has been approved by the Ward Committee, no further action has been taken on it. We are renting a room in the school for one rupee. In return, the students in the ward will be given free guidance by the concerned organization.”
