Pune, 3rd February 2026: The first phase of India’s Census 2027—covering house listing and housing enumeration—will be carried out within the limits of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) from May 1 to June 15, 2026, the civic body said on Tuesday.

The census exercise will be conducted across all 15 ward offices under the PMC jurisdiction. As per the directions issued by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India and the Maharashtra Census Directorate, a review meeting was held on February 3 to assess preparatory work and guide the officials responsible for the operation in Pune city.

During the meeting, all 15 Charge Census Officers and City Census Officers were briefed on their roles and responsibilities. They were instructed to ensure that the census work is completed within the stipulated time frame.

For the first time, India’s census will be conducted digitally. In this context, officials were told to begin all necessary groundwork related to the appointment of enumerators, their training, and the use of digital tools, in line with the government’s time-bound programme.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (Special) Omprakash Divte directed all concerned officers to take every required preparatory step to ensure the successful execution of the census process in Pune.

The PMC said the census is a crucial national exercise and stressed the importance of coordination and timely implementation to ensure accurate and comprehensive data collection during the 2027 Census.
