Pune, 11th September 2023: The city of Pune is set to welcome hawker markets across eight designated areas, marking a significant development in the efforts to address the needs of street vendors and alleviate traffic congestion. These markets will operate weekly farmers’ markets on Saturdays and Sundays, with hawkers utilizing the spaces on the remaining six days.

The initiative follows a suggestion made by Health Minister Tanaji Sawant, who highlighted the critical need for organized market spaces to accommodate street vendors. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken swift action in response, with ongoing planning efforts to bring this vision to fruition. Minister Sawant recently reviewed the progress of this initiative.

Pune has long grappled with severe traffic congestion, exacerbated by the presence of numerous street traders. To mitigate this issue, Minister Sawant recommended that the PMC provide essential amenities at the market locations while excluding daily maintenance tasks from the tender.

During discussions with Pune Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar, the Health Minister also addressed concerns related to metro parking space and encroachments near Shankar Maharaj Math.

In the first phase of the project, eight locations have been earmarked, with six of them already prepared for use. Further locations are under consideration. These designated areas will serve as the foundation for the hawker market project, accommodating farmers on weekends and hawkers during the week.

Deputy Commissioner Madhav Jagtap provided insights into the project’s progress, stating that the markets would soon be operational in areas such as Baner, Bavdhan, and Kondhwa.

Additionally, the Health Minister emphasized the importance of removing encroachments near Shankar Maharaj Math on Satara Road, citing the inconvenience caused to devotees. Furthermore, the discussion extended to the lack of adequate parking infrastructure at metro stations, necessitating the need for parking arrangements along metro lines. The meeting highlighted the importance of addressing these issues comprehensively.
