Pune: PMC to Give Free Medicines for High Blood Pressure and Diabetes
Pune, 26th April 2023: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to provide free generic medicines for high blood pressure and diabetes in all municipal clinics. The PMC has received a fund of Rs 43 lakhs under the National Urban Health Mission. The municipal administration has issued a tender and placed the proposal before the Standing Committee for approval.
With changing lifestyles and increasing stress, the number of high blood pressure and diabetes patients is increasing day by day in the city. According to the data of the World Health Organization (WHO), 25% of the population over the age of 30 have high blood pressure, while 12% have diabetes.
To combat this, the central government, the state government, and the PMC have decided to provide free generic medicines for the treatment of non-communicable diseases through Arogyavardhini Kendra. Three medicines for high blood pressure and three medicines for diabetes will be given to citizens free of cost.
A card is required to avail of various medical schemes of PMC. However, for the generic medicines for high blood pressure and diabetes, there will be no need for a card. Assistant Health Head Dr Sajeev Wavare said, “To get this medicine, a blood test report of high blood pressure and diabetes will be required.”
This initiative will provide relief to the citizens of Pune who are facing the burden of high medical expenses. The scheme will help the economically weaker section of society who cannot afford expensive medicines for non-communicable diseases. The availability of free generic medicines for high blood pressure and diabetes in all municipal clinics will make it easier for patients to access the medicines.
This move by PMC is a step in the right direction towards making healthcare more accessible and affordable for all citizens. It is hoped that this scheme will encourage more people to get tested and treated for high blood pressure and diabetes.
