Pune, 7th January 2022: Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar has decided to implement Abhay Yojana only for residential properties. Now onwards action will be taken on the arrears of commercial property.

The Municipal Commissioner had convened a meeting of the officials of the Property Tax Department on Wednesday to decide in this regard. In this meeting, it was decided to implement Abhay Yojana only for residential properties.

The decision by the commissioner has put an end to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s intention to implement the Abhay Yojana for both residential and commercial properties.

The commissioner said,”repeated implementation of Abhay Yojana is a blow to honest taxpayers. However, if the scheme is to be implemented, it should be for residential arrears only. The implementation of Abhay Yojana for commercial arrears would not be appropriate in the present scenario.”

The ruling BJP had launched the Abhay Yojana last year to recover property tax. The scheme was for those with arrears of Rs 50 lakh. The scheme was approved unanimously after accepting the demands of the opposition parties to exclude the arrears above 50 lakh. About Rs 450 crore was recovered through the scheme implemented last year. Under the scheme, 75 percent rebate was paid on interest on penalty arrears.

“Under this scheme, only resident property tax arrears will be exempted. The corporation has started action on the arrears of commercial property. So far 1600 such commercial properties have been sealed. A fine of Rs 36 crore was recovered from the arrears”, said Vikram Kumar.
