Pune, 5th November 2025: In a major step toward improving cancer diagnostics for economically weaker citizens, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated preparations to set up a PET Scan and Radio-Diagnostic Centre under a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model. The initiative aims to provide PET scans at significantly reduced rates. Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said that the project is expected to become operational within the next few months.

Currently, neither PMC-run hospitals nor government hospitals in the city offer PET scan services, forcing patients, especially those from low-income backgrounds, to depend on private hospitals. The high cost of PET scans in the private sector often prevents timely diagnosis and treatment. Recognizing this gap, PMC has decided to introduce the service at affordable, government-notified CGHS rates.

The proposed diagnostic centre will be established in the building of the ongoing Vasantdada Patil Training Centre, located next to the Hirabaug Health Post in Swargate. Commissioner Ram conducted an on-site inspection to review the project’s progress.

Health Department Chief Dr. Nina Borade, Assistant Health Officer Dr. Sanjeev Wavre, and other officials were present during the visit.

Along with PET scan facilities, the centre will house advanced diagnostic capabilities including:
Pathology and biochemistry laboratories
MRI
CT scan
Other high-end diagnostic technologies

Once operational, PMC will become the first municipal corporation in the country to provide PET scans and radio-diagnostic services through its own health system.

The civic administration has set an ambitious target to complete the project by December 2025, with efforts underway to expedite the work.

Affordable Cancer Screening:
Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Sanjeev Wavre said the project is designed to ensure that economically weaker cancer patients are not deprived of essential diagnostic tests due to high costs. PMC plans to make PET scans available at reduced charges, allowing poor and needy patients to undergo timely cancer detection.

Dr. Wavre added that the municipal commissioner has instructed officials to ensure the work is completed within the next few months and to strictly adhere to the project timeline.

Cancer cases have been steadily increasing in Pune over the years. Medical experts emphasize that early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment, but many patients delay testing because they cannot afford private healthcare fees.

To address this gap, PMC’s upcoming PET Scan and Radio-Diagnostic Centre will offer services at Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) rates, significantly lowering the financial burden on vulnerable families.
