Pune: PMC to Widen 100-Year-Old Railway Underpass Between RTO Chowk and Shahir Amar Sheikh Chowk
Pune, 12th October 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated the process to widen the century-old railway underpass (Bhuyari Marg) connecting RTO Chowk to Shahir Amar Sheikh Chowk in Mangalwar Peth, aiming to ease traffic congestion in one of the city’s busiest central zones.
According to officials from the PMC Projects Department, a consultant will soon be appointed to conduct a site survey and prepare a detailed project report (DPR). The proposal is expected to be ready within a month of the consultant’s appointment. Work will commence after receiving approval from the Railway Administration.
The underpass, nearly 100 years old and just 5 meters wide, connects key areas including RTO Chowk, Mangalwar Peth, Sassoon Hospital, the District Magistrate’s Office, and Pune Railway Station. The location witnesses heavy vehicular traffic throughout the day.
A PMC official said, “RTO Chowk and Shahir Amar Sheikh Chowk experience high traffic volume throughout the day. Once two additional lanes are constructed, congestion in this area is expected to reduce significantly. Correspondence has already been initiated with the Railway Administration, and we are hopeful of a positive response.”
Railway Pune Division PRO and DCM Hemant Kumar Behera confirmed that the concerned railway authority has received the proposal. “Our officials will review the proposal, and a joint team will conduct a site survey to assess feasibility before taking the next steps,” he added.
PMC has proposed constructing a new 9-10 meter wide underpass once railway land becomes available and widening the existing structure to create a two-lane underpass with a total width of 20 meters.
