Pune: PMRDA To Begin Tender Process For Long-Delayed Chakan Bypass Road
Chakan, 10th January 2025 – In a major development to alleviate traffic congestion in Chakan, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has announced that the tender process for the long-awaited Chakan bypass road will begin soon. PMRDA Commissioner Yogesh Mhase confirmed the allocation of ₹100 crore for the project, with the cost estimation currently in its final stages.
The proposed 2.5-kilometer bypass road, designed to provide a crucial alternative for heavy traffic in the industrial hub of Chakan, has been under discussion for over three decades. However, delays in implementation have caused frustration among entrepreneurs, residents, drivers, and workers. Many have called on PMRDA to finalize the route boundaries and expedite construction.
The bypass road aims to resolve severe traffic congestion in Chakan city and surrounding areas, including the Pune-Nashik highway and the Chakan-Shikrapur and Chakan-Talegaon routes. The road will divert industrial estate traffic, easing pressure on major highways and local roads.
The project was initially surveyed two years ago by PMRDA officials, local police, and the then Deputy Commissioner of the Transport Department. Despite completing detailed calculations for the route, the final boundary has yet to be determined.
Local leaders, including Medankarwadi Sarpanch Amol Salve, Deputy Sarpanch Mahendra Medankar, and Shiv Sena District Chief Ashok Khandebharad, have called on PMRDA to move beyond planning and begin construction. They argue that completing the bypass road will reduce traffic jams, accidents, and delays that often prevent ambulances from reaching hospitals in time.
“If PMRDA fails to act, citizens are considering excluding villages from its jurisdiction,” warned residents, expressing dissatisfaction with the lack of development in PMRDA-managed areas.
The 36-meter-wide bypass road will feature four lanes—two in each direction—with a median in the middle and intersections at key locations. The majority of the land required for the road belongs to farmers. PMRDA has assured that affected landowners will receive cash compensation and Floor Space Index (FSI) benefits as part of the acquisition process.
– Route: Rasefata – Kadachiwadi – Medankarwadi – Bangla Wasti
– Length: 2.5 kilometers
– Width: 36 meters
– Features: Four-lane road with a central median and multiple intersections
The completion of the Chakan bypass is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety, and boost connectivity to Pune, Nashik, Talegaon, and Mumbai. Residents and local stakeholders hope PMRDA’s renewed focus on the project will finally lead to tangible progress.
