Pune, 21st May 2024: Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has assured the public that the police are taking the tragic accident in Kalyani Nagar, where a speeding Porsche hit a bike, resulting in the deaths of two IT engineers, with utmost seriousness. The Commissioner outlined the stringent measures taken and reassured that justice would be served.

Commissioner Kumar emphasized that the Pune Police are handling the case with “utmost sincerity and sensitivity.” Here are the key actions and statements he shared:

1. Application of Section 304 IPC: Unlike the usual application of Section 304A (causing death by negligence), the police applied Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code, a non-bailable offence, on Sunday morning. This reflects the gravity of the incident.

2. Juvenile Justice Act: The police moved the court the same day to try the juvenile accused as an adult under Section 15 of the Juvenile Justice Act, defining the incident as a ‘heinous crime’ under Section 2 of the Act. The objective was to prevent the accused from getting bail.

3. Court’s Decision and Appeal: Despite the police’s efforts, the court disallowed their application and granted bail to the accused. The police have since appealed this order to a higher court.

4. Action Against Facilitators: The father of the juvenile, who allowed him to take the car and facilitated his visit to the pub, along with the pub owners who served alcohol to the underage accused, have been booked under Sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act.

5. Stringent Measures: Commissioner Kumar reiterated that the actions taken by the police are the most stringent possible. The police are committed to ensuring that the accused faces the harshest possible punishment.

6. Public Misconceptions: He addressed any misconceptions about the police soft-peddling the case, stating unequivocally that such views are incorrect.

7. Support for the Accused: Any individuals found supporting the accused will face severe punishment.

8. Future Measures: The Commissioner also stated that issues related to nuisance from pubs, especially in residential areas, and underage drinking will be handled firmly in coordination with the relevant departments.

Commissioner Kumar concluded by urging the public to trust the police and assured that the guilty will be punished irrespective of their economic status.
