Pune Police Officer Jalinder Supekar In Trouble Again; Accused Of Demanding Rs 550 Crore From Prisoner For Release

Pune, 5th June 2025: Police officer JalinderSupekar, already under the spotlight for his alleged role in the controversial Vaishnavi Hagawane death case, is once again facing serious allegations. This time, he has been accused of demanding an astronomical sum of ₹550 crore from a prisoner in exchange for securing his release.
The allegation comes from senior lawyer Nivrutti Karad, representing inmates Nanasaheb Gaikwad and Ganesh Gaikwad, both currently lodged in Amravati Central Jail in connection with multiple criminal cases registered in Pune. Karad filed a petition before the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court on 4th November 2024, directly accusing Supekar of extortion.
According to Karad, the Gaikwad brothers have been in judicial custody since 2012 and were transferred to Amravati Jail after surviving a life-threatening attack during their incarceration. On 19th August 2023, while serving as Inspector General, Supekar allegedly visited the jail and summoned both inmates into a closed room between 9:30 am and 12:30 pm. There, he is said to have issued threats and demanded money.
“Supekar told them that since their assets are worth ₹1,500 crore, they must pay ₹550 crore in exchange for being acquitted from all criminal cases,” Karad stated. He added that a petition has been filed before the Nagpur High Court and that the court has since issued a notice to Supekar regarding the matter.
With these fresh allegations surfacing alongside the ongoing scrutiny in the Vaishnavi Hagawane case, Supekar’s legal troubles appear to be mounting. The gravity of the accusations—extortion from undertrial prisoners under the guise of authority—has sparked significant concern over the misuse of power within police ranks.
