Pune Police Register FIR Against 2 NIA Most Wanted Men; ‘Drone Material, Pistol Pouch, and White Pills’ Seized

Pune, 19th July 2023: Two men, Mohammed Imran Mohammed Yusuf Khan (23) and Mohammed Yunus Mohammed Yakub Saki (24), hailing from Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh, has been arrested by the Pune City Police after a box containing suspicious items, including “drone material,” a pistol pouch, a live cartridge, white-coloured pills, fake Aadhaar cards, and other documents, was recovered from their possession.

Both of them are on the most wanted list of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with Rajasthan explosive conspiracy case.

According to Pune Police Commissioner Retesh Kumaarr, the Kothrud police station patrolling team comprising policemen Pradeep Chavan and Amol Nazan caught three men while stealing a bike near Badhai Chowk in Kothrud around 2.45 am on Tuesday (July 18). One of their accomplice Mohammed Shahnawaz Shafiurrehman Alam (31) of Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, managed to escape. During interrogation, it was found that they were wanted by the NIA for allegedly belonging to the ISIS-inspired terror group ‘Sufa’ based in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh and wanted in connection with a conspiracy to perpetrate acts of terror in Rajasthan last year.

He also said that they were residing in Pune for the last 16-17 months.

After incriminating materials were found in their rented flat in the Mithanagar area of Kondhwa, Kothrud police station registered a case against the three persons for offences under sections 468, 379, 511, and 34 of the IPC, as well as those under the Arms Act and Maharashtra Police Act. Police Constable Amol Nazan has lodged the complaint.

Senior Police Inspector Hemant Patil, in-charge of Kothrud police station, produced Khan and Saki before Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) A C Birajdar on Wednesday afternoon and requested eight-day police custody.

Inspector Patil informed the court that investigations are underway to determine whether the accused were involved in subversive activities during their stay in Pune. During the search of their residence, an electronic weighing machine and a thermometer were among the items found, while the drone itself remained unlocated. The police highlighted that the recovered pistol pouch and cartridge were unaccompanied by the actual pistol, and the nature of the white pills needs further investigation.

Inspector Patil informed the court that the content in the seized laptop and four mobile phones, along with the call data records of the accused, require thorough examination. He also said that Khan and Saki were graphic designers by profession.

Assistant public prosecutor Renuka Deshpande Karjatkar stressed the necessity of custodial interrogation in view of national security, considering the recovered items, the suspects’ previous records, and the search for their absconding associate.

However, the defence lawyers, Yashpal Purohit and Saurabh More, opposed the plea.

After hearing both sides, the court remanded the two accused in police custody till July 25.
