Pune, 31st December 2024: Punekars can expect a smoother commute in the new year as the city police gear up to tackle growing traffic congestion. Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has announced a comprehensive plan to address the issue, with measures including the streamlining of traffic signals, installation of advanced radar-based technology, and the expansion of CCTV surveillance across the city.

Speaking at a press conference, Commissioner Kumar emphasized that resolving traffic jams and ensuring smoother traffic flow will be a key focus in 2025. A proposal to upgrade traffic signals and improve traffic management has been submitted to the State Government for approval. The plan also includes installing an additional 2,800 high-tech CCTV cameras, adding to the 1,500 already operational, to monitor and curb violations.

“The city’s rapid expansion has led to increasing traffic congestion, but we are taking steps to address this. Major intersections, roads, and areas prone to jams have been identified. We are coordinating with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), and Mahametro officials to ensure seamless traffic flow,” Kumar stated.

Highlighting the use of modern tools, Kumar explained that radar-based technology would play a crucial role in managing traffic. This system will analyze traffic speed and congestion levels in real time, enabling authorities to quickly identify problem areas and implement solutions more effectively.

Kumar also noted a significant reduction in the number of serious road accidents this year, with figures dropping by 20% to 25% compared to the last two to three years. Despite the rise in the number of road accident victims, the commissioner stressed that enhanced traffic management and advanced technology would help further improve road safety in the city.
