Pune: Possibility Of Onion Price Increase Within A Month

Pune, 19th September 2022: Onion prices have been stable for the past few months; however, there are indications of an increase in onion prices within a month due to increasing demand.

By Dussehra-Diwali, the price of one kg of onion in the retail market is likely to reach Rs 35 to Rs 40. At present, the price of one kg of onion in the retail market is between Rs 20 to Rs 30 per kg depending on the grade. Onions from Maharashtra are in demand in South and North India.

Heavy rains in Karnataka have damaged newly harvested onions. The new onion crop in Maharashtra is likely to arrive by November. Onion cultivation is good in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. However, when it comes to grading, the quality of onions from Maharashtra is better than that from other states. Onion demand increases during the Dussehra-Diwali period. Within a month, the demand for onions from abroad will increase in Maharashtra. Therefore, there is a possibility of an increase in the price of onions in October. Onion trader Ritesh Poman of Sri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard said that the price of one kg of onion in the retail market will reach Rs 35 to Rs 40.

Onion prices have been stable for the past few months. 50 truckloads of onions are being imported from Junnar, Ambegaon, Khed, and Shirur of Pune district as well as Srigonda, Parner, Jamkhed, and non-Sangamner areas of Nagar district in the wholesale market of Market Yard. Rs 80 to Rs 130 are fetched for 10 kg of onion in the wholesale market. Last year in September, in the wholesale market, 10 kg of onion fetched Rs 180 to Rs 200. Poman mentioned that onion cultivation has done well in the state.

Onion exports have declined. There is currently a decline in the demand for onions from southern and northern states. Due to the rainy and cold climate, the spoilage rate of onions has increased. Therefore, at present, the farmers are sending the onion stored in the warehouse for sale on a large scale. Onion exports to Bangladesh and Gulf countries are low.
