Pune: Public Invited to Explore CWPRS Research Facilities During 109th Anniversary Events

Pune, 8th June 2025: The Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), one of India’s premier institutions in hydraulic and water resources research, will mark its 109th Foundation Day on June 14, 2025, with a public exhibition and a series of events aimed at raising awareness about its significant contributions to national and international water and power projects.
Announcing the celebration at a press conference, newly appointed CWPRS Director Dr. Prabhat Chandra said the event will be open to the public from 10 am to 4 pm at the CWPRS campus. Entry is free, and special invitations have been extended to students from schools and colleges across Pune to inspire the next generation of engineers and researchers.
Innovation and Impact in Water Research
CWPRS, under the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, has played a critical role in the development of key infrastructure projects across India and neighbouring countries. The institute recently contributed to the development of the Vadhvan Port, Navi Mumbai International Airport, and is currently engaged in hydraulic studies for the ambitious Kalpasar coastal reservoir project in Gujarat.
Highlighting the institution’s future direction, Dr. Chandra said, “CWPRS is intensifying its focus on innovative research in the water and power sectors, including coastal and environmental studies. We are also leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to improve project outcomes.”
He added that CWPRS is also actively researching climate change adaptation, salinity ingression, and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF). Plans are underway to establish a Centre of Excellence for Dam Safety to offer comprehensive, science-backed solutions for one of India’s most critical infrastructure needs.
Lecture, Documentaries, and Interactive Learning
The Foundation Day event will begin with a keynote lecture on “Water Governance” by Chief Engineer of the National Water Academy, D.S. Chaskar, who will also be the Chief Guest for the event.
The programme includes:
- Cultural performances
- Quiz competitions
- Tree plantation drive
- Documentary screenings
- Exhibits of physical models and research activities
Visitors will be able to view documentaries and models related to major national projects such as the Mumbai Port, Yamuna River, Ratle Hydroelectric Project, Polavaram Dam, Mangdechhu Project in Bhutan, and the Kalpasar Project, among others. Facilities such as the Wave Flume, HMC Lab, and CMRT will also be showcased through interactive presentations.
Dr. Chandra emphasized the importance of such public-facing events, saying, “It is vital that the public, especially students, understand the extensive work being done in the fields of water management and power research. These initiatives are key to ensuring India’s water security and sustainable development.”
A Legacy of Scientific Excellence
Established in 1916, CWPRS has built a legacy of supporting India’s water infrastructure through cutting-edge research, physical and mathematical modeling, and consultation for dams, barrages, harbours, and river training works. It has extended its services beyond national borders, becoming a trusted partner in water engineering for neighbouring countries as well.
With over a century of expertise, the institution is poised to continue its pivotal role in shaping India’s water future through science, innovation, and collaboration.
