Pune: Public Nuisance Escalates as Drinkers Consume Alcohol on Sidewalks Near PMC Building

Shivajinagar, 18th February 2025: Residents and pedestrians in Shivajinagar are facing increasing harassment from individuals consuming alcohol on sidewalks near a wine shop at the entrance of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Building (Manapa). Despite regulations permitting only the sale of alcohol, the shop is reportedly selling empty glasses and food items, enabling on-site drinking.
The Authorities expected to take action against public drinking in the vicinity of wine shops but appear to be turning a blind eye to the issue. From 6 PM to 10 PM daily, drinkers can be seen openly consuming alcohol in various spots around the area.
Food vendors have also set up nearby to cater to the drinkers, exacerbating the problem. Residents express surprise at the lack of police intervention, given that this is occurring right at the entrance of the municipal corporation.
“Wine shops and bars routinely violate regulations. They are only permitted to sell alcohol, but they sell other items as well. Every morning, the streets are littered with empty bottles from the previous night’s drinking,” said a Shivajinagar resident.
A local female resident complained about the foul odour on the streets and sidewalks, stating she feels unsafe walking in the area during the evening.
Senior Police Inspector Chandrasekhar Sawant, in charge of Shivajinagar Police Station, assured that “Regular action is ongoing, and further action will be taken.”
