Pune, 17th June 2026: Pune railway station is set for a significant capacity expansion with the Railways launching a ₹600-crore infrastructure upgrade that will include six new platforms, extensive yard remodelling and the development of supporting rail facilities aimed at handling the city’s growing passenger traffic.

The foundation stone for the project was laid on Wednesday by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at Pune railway station. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis joined the event through video conferencing.

According to the Railways, the project will transform Pune into a larger rail hub by increasing the station’s platform capacity from six to twelve. Along with the construction of six new platforms, the existing platforms will be extended to accommodate longer trains and improve operational efficiency.

A key component of the project is the remodelling of Pune Yard, which is expected to streamline train movements and reduce operational bottlenecks. Railway officials said the upgraded infrastructure will enable the introduction of nearly 20 additional train services from Pune in the coming years.

The expansion plan also includes the creation of a new station entry point to improve passenger circulation, development of terminal facilities at Alandi and construction of coaching maintenance depots at Ghorpadi. These facilities are expected to strengthen operational capabilities and support future growth in rail services.

Speaking at the event, Vaishnaw said Pune’s population has crossed 70 lakh and passenger demand continues to rise, making large-scale railway infrastructure expansion necessary. He said the planned works are designed to meet the city’s long-term transportation needs and increase the station’s handling capacity.

The minister also reviewed the progress of station redevelopment projects across Maharashtra and said work is underway at 132 railway stations in the state, including Pune, Hadapsar, Mumbai CSMT, Kolhapur, Satara, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Nashik Road and Nagpur.

Among those present at the event were Union Minister of State for Cooperation and Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, Maharashtra Legislative Council Chairman Ram Shinde, Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil, MLC Vivek Kolhe, Central Railway General Manager Rajeev Shrivastava and senior railway officials.
