Pune: Railways Developing Rs 30.55 Crore Goods Terminal at Talegaon for Auto and Industrial Cargo
Pune, 4th June 2026: Indian Railways is developing a modern goods shed at Talegaon in Pune district at an estimated cost of ₹30.55 crore, a move aimed at strengthening freight transportation infrastructure in the Pune Division and supporting industrial and agricultural logistics in the Chakan–Talegaon belt.
The proposed facility is expected to enhance rail-based cargo movement for the region’s automobile manufacturing units, ancillary industries and agricultural sectors. Railway officials said the project is being developed to improve freight handling capacity and operational efficiency in one of Maharashtra’s major industrial corridors.
According to railway authorities, the Talegaon and Chakan region houses several automobile manufacturers and associated industries, with a large share of cargo movement currently dependent on road transport. The new goods shed will provide industries with direct access to the railway freight network for dispatch and receipt of goods, including containers, automobile parts and finished vehicles.
Officials stated that the facility is expected to reduce dependency on heavy road transport, improve turnaround time and support faster movement of industrial cargo.
As part of the project, the Railways is also constructing three waterway bridges within the goods shed premises to ensure efficient drainage during the monsoon season. The Talegaon region has witnessed recurring waterlogging issues during heavy rainfall, and the bridges are intended to prevent water accumulation and ensure uninterrupted freight operations.
Railway officials said the project has been planned with modern infrastructure and drainage systems to support long-term freight handling requirements.
The Talegaon terminal is also expected to add to the freight capacity of the Pune Division and emerge as an important logistics node for industrial cargo movement in the region. Officials said the terminal will handle automobile cargo, containers and other industrial materials on a large scale.
Hemant Kumar Behera, Public Relations Officer, Pune Division, said, “Automobile parts, finished vehicles, containers, and other industrial materials will be transported on a large scale from this facility. Industries will gain an additional avenue to integrate with the railway network. This project will not only enhance the Railways’ revenue but also contribute significantly to pollution control.”
The Pune Division currently operates multiple goods sheds across Maharashtra for handling commodities such as automobiles, fertilizer, cement, sugar, food grains, onions and industrial materials. Existing freight handling locations include Gur Market, Miraj, Sangli, Sasvad Road, Loni, Chinchwad, Baramati, Satara, Karad, Phursungi, Lonand, Daund, Shri Rampur, Kopargaon, Rahuri, Belapur and Ahmednagar among others.
According to railway freight data, different goods sheds in the Pune Division presently handle automobile cargo, fertilizer, cement, sugar, onions, food grains, steel coils and petroleum products depending on regional industrial and agricultural requirements.
