Pune Rains: Wall Collapse, Waterlogging Cripple Life in Undri’s Kad Nagar Area

Undri, 27th May 2025: Torrential rains on Monday evening wreaked havoc in the Kad Nagar area of Undri, Pune, disrupting commercial activity and raising alarms over poor drainage and civic preparedness. The sudden downpour led to severe waterlogging, especially in low-lying commercial zones, where floodwater entered several shops, forcing temporary closures and damaging goods.
A significant incident was reported near the Bishop’s School in Undri, where a wall adjacent to a nala (drain) collapsed under the pressure of rainwater. The breach allowed a strong flow of water onto the adjacent road, triggering traffic chaos and creating safety hazards for commuters and nearby residents.
“We were caught completely off guard,” said Ajit Gokhale, a shop owner whose garment store was flooded. “Water started rising quickly and entered the shop within minutes. We tried to save what we could, but some merchandise is already damaged. This keeps happening every year, but no permanent solution is provided.”
Residents have raised concerns about the fragile civic infrastructure in Undri, a fast-growing suburb where construction often outpaces public utility upgrades.
“The drainage system here is either choked or non-functional,” said Nikita Deshmukh, a local resident. “It doesn’t take more than 30 minutes of rain to flood this entire stretch. The wall collapse is just one more sign that nothing has been maintained. We need PMC to act before a major disaster occurs.”
While no injuries were reported from the wall collapse, the incident has reignited debate over urban planning and disaster resilience in newly developed areas on Pune’s outskirts.
