Pune Ranks Third In India For Software Exports Yet IT Hub Faces Persistent Infrastructure Issues
Pune, 27th December 2024: Pune has emerged as a major force in India’s Information Technology (IT) sector, maintaining its position as the third-largest exporter of software in the country. Union Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently revealed export figures for the last five years, highlighting Pune’s steady growth in the sector.
According to the data, Bengaluru continues to lead the nation with software exports worth ₹4,07,077 crore, followed by Hyderabad at ₹1,21,115 crore. Pune closely follows, with an impressive export figure of ₹1,05,818 crore. The city’s rise in the IT sector can be traced back to the establishment of Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjawadi in the 1990s, which acted as a catalyst for IT growth in the region.
Export figures for the past five years:
2019-20- ₹50,157 crore
2020-21- ₹56,938 crore
2021-22- ₹70,487 crore
2022-23- ₹94,106 crore
2023-24- ₹1,05,818 crore
Pune’s advancements in the IT sector have been accompanied by increased adoption of cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), contributing to its sustained prominence in the industry. However, despite its success, the city’s IT hub in Hinjawadi continues to grapple with critical infrastructure challenges, particularly traffic congestion and waste management.
On Tuesday, Industries Minister Uday Samant met with representatives of the Hinjawadi Industries Association to address these longstanding issues. During the meeting, 17 key concerns were raised, including the need for alternative roads within the IT park, the construction of flyovers, and the implementation of solid waste management projects.
The meeting was attended by officials including Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) Chief Engineer Nitin Wankhede, Regional Officer Archana Pathare, and representatives from industry associations. Minister Samant assured attendees that he would escalate unresolved matters, including those requiring intervention from the Chief Minister’s Office.
