Pune Records Dip In Water Tanker Trips Despite Increased Heat In April

Pune, 9th May 2025: Despite the intensifying heat in April, the number of water tanker trips in Pune has decreased compared to March, according to data from the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Water Supply Department. In March 2025, 47,896 tanker trips were recorded, while in April, despite soaring temperatures, the number dropped by 60 to 47,836 trips.
However, a year-on-year comparison indicates a rise in the number of tanker trips. In April 2024, the city recorded 41,603 trips, whereas in April 2025, the number surged to 47,836 – an increase of 6,233 trips. Similarly, in March 2025, the number of trips stood at 47,896, reflecting the growing demand for water across the city.
The city’s expanding urban areas and increasing water demand typically result in a surge in tanker trips between March and May. According to officials from the Water Supply Department, it is common for the number of trips to rise in April and peak in May. However, this year, despite the heightened heat in April, there was an unexpected decline in the number of tanker trips compared to March.
With the city’s expanding urbanization, the demand for water tankers has increased significantly, particularly in large residential societies. During the three summer months, private tanker operators often charge exorbitant rates, exploiting the high demand for water. Despite complaints from citizens, the PMC does not regulate the rates charged by private tanker operators, leaving residents vulnerable to price exploitation.
