Pune Residents Raise Alarm Over Severe Traffic Between Rajaram Bridge and Mhatre Bridge
Pune, 16th July 2026: Residents have urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to take immediate measures to address worsening traffic congestion and road infrastructure issues on the DP Road stretch between Rajaram Bridge and Mhatre Bridge, with Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Chandrakant Patil assuring that a joint meeting with civic officials, traffic police and local residents will be held soon to discuss long-term solutions.
The assurance came after Manjushri Khardekar, Chairperson of the Warje–Karvenagar Ward Office, conducted an on-site inspection of the stretch along with PMC officials, traffic representatives, local residents and BJP office-bearers. A detailed report highlighting the civic and traffic-related concerns was later submitted to Patil.
During a telephonic interaction with those present at the inspection, Patil assured that a coordination meeting would be convened within the coming week to review the issues and finalise corrective measures aimed at easing traffic movement on the busy corridor.
During the inspection, residents highlighted severe traffic congestion near Rajaram Bridge, where vehicles reportedly remain stuck for long durations despite the deployment of traffic police personnel. The traffic bottleneck frequently extends towards Sinhagad Road, causing inconvenience to daily commuters.
Officials and residents also expressed concern that traffic volume is expected to increase significantly once the Suncity flyover becomes operational, stressing the need for immediate planning to prevent further congestion.
Among the key issues raised were unsafe openings in road dividers used by pedestrians, the absence of designated pedestrian crossings, recurring waterlogging at several locations, narrow stretches requiring road widening after land acquisition, encroachments obstructing traffic flow, and the need for continuous road dividers to improve vehicle movement.
Residents also demanded the installation of a traffic signal at Matoshri Old Age Home Chowk and corrective measures near Pandit Farm, where the absence of a road divider has created traffic management challenges.
The inspection was attended by senior officials from the PMC Road Department, including Superintendent Engineer Abhijit Ambekar, Executive Engineer Purushottam Bhutada, Assistant Commissioner Asmita Tambe, Deputy Engineers and Junior Engineers, along with BJP spokesperson Sandeep Khardekar, local office-bearers, social workers and residents.
Expressing confidence in the outcome, Manjushri Khardekar said the minister’s assurance of direct intervention has raised hopes that the long-pending traffic and civic issues on the Rajaram Bridge Mhatre Bridge stretch will finally be addressed, providing much-needed relief to commuters.
