Pune: Residents Take PMC to Consumer Court Over Water Tax for Inadequate Supply
Pune, 14th October 2024: In a significant development, the State Consumer Court has admitted a case filed by Pune residents against the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) over its failure to provide adequate water supply despite charging water tax. The residents demand a simple resolution: “No water, no water tax,” along with a refund of the previously collected tax with 2% interest per month.
Advocate Krunnal Gharre, representing the complainants, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision to consider the case. He stated, “We are happy the matter is being considered. Citizens are being forced to pay water fees even when they don’t receive sufficient water. The PMC charges a 2% monthly interest for delayed payments. All we ask is for a refund of the amount collected and an exemption from this tax until the PMC can provide the necessary 150 liters of water per day per person.”
The court has allowed the case to proceed through the legal process and has accepted it as a representative suit. This means that the ruling will not only impact the individual complainants but also set a precedent for all affected residents. This decision amplifies the citizens’ call for accountability from the PMC for not delivering essential services as required.
Further updates will be shared as the case advances.
