Pune: Residents Warn of Monsoon Chaos After Waterlogging in Kalyani Nagar
Kalyani Nagar, 30th March 2026: Even a brief spell of rain on Sunday exposed serious gaps in drainage infrastructure and road maintenance in Kalyani Nagar, leaving residents and commuters struggling with waterlogging at several locations.
Within minutes of rainfall, water accumulated rapidly on multiple stretches of road, indicating that the drainage network in the area is either clogged, inadequate, or not functioning efficiently. The problem was further aggravated by poor road conditions, uneven surfaces, and numerous potholes, making commuting risky for motorists and pedestrians alike.
Residents reported that several roads in Kalyani Nagar quickly turned into waterlogged patches, triggering traffic congestion during peak evening hours. Vehicles were seen moving slowly through submerged sections, while pedestrians were forced to wade through stagnant water.
Locals raised multiple concerns about the situation, stating that waterlogging combined with damaged roads has created hazardous conditions across the area.
According to residents, the stagnant water often hides potholes and uneven surfaces, significantly increasing the risk of accidents and vehicle damage. Pedestrian safety has also become a major concern, particularly for senior citizens and children who find it difficult to navigate flooded streets.
Apart from the immediate inconvenience, residents warned of potential health risks if the problem persists. Stagnant water can lead to mosquito breeding and increase the risk of infections. They also pointed out that blocked roads could delay the movement of emergency services such as ambulances and fire brigade vehicles.
Many residents expressed concern that if such disruption can occur due to a short spell of rain, the situation during the upcoming monsoon could become far more severe and may bring traffic in the area to a complete standstill.
Monica S., a resident of Kalyani Nagar, said it was frustrating to see the same issues recurring every year. “Despite knowing the challenges, there seems to be no proper planning or execution. Today’s rain caused significant disruption, and people were stuck in traffic for long durations. Roads were flooded and potholes made the situation worse. Authorities must prioritise infrastructure maintenance and ensure that such problems are addressed before the monsoon season. Residents deserve better living conditions,” she said.
Another resident, Haresh Bharwani, said it was alarming that even a short spell of rain could disrupt an entire locality like Kalyani Nagar. “Waterlogging combined with damaged roads creates a dangerous situation for drivers and pedestrians alike. Vehicles struggle to move and people are forced to walk through dirty, stagnant water. The lack of proper drainage maintenance is clearly visible. This is a recurring problem every year, yet no long-term solution is implemented. We urge the Pune Municipal Corporation to take immediate and permanent corrective measures instead of temporary fixes,” he said.
Residents have urged the Pune Municipal Corporation to take urgent steps to address the issue before the monsoon season. They have demanded immediate desilting and cleaning of drainage lines, identification and rectification of chronic waterlogging points, and priority repairs of potholes and uneven road surfaces.
They also called for thorough pre-monsoon inspection and maintenance of stormwater drains, deployment of on-ground teams during rainfall for quick response, and long-term upgrades to the drainage infrastructure.
With the monsoon approaching, residents say swift and decisive action is essential to prevent large-scale disruption and ensure the safety of commuters and pedestrians in Kalyani Nagar.
