Shivajinagar, 15th January 2022: On Friday, a man who fell in a quarry at Vetal Tekdi (Pune) got injured and was rescued by the Pune Fire Department. He was trying to rescue a cat that he had spotted stuck inside the quarry.

“Kudos to the Pune Fire Department for saving the human, but we weren’t going to leave the cat behind – especially because several people were certain there was a cat still alive in there. We decided to wait till the morning and go back in for the cat”, said Tuhin Satarkar, Head – Rescues at RESQ.

Satarkar and other members of the RESQ team reached the location and could hear the cat, but couldn’t spot it. “We used our thermal drone to locate the animal and finally found the cat stuck on a little dry island patch – she had probably managed to swim for her life there! It was not possible to rappel down that patch of quarry so Naresh and Harshad went out in our kayak with a net and crate, trapped her in and brought her safely on to land”, he added.

“We often come across situations where well-intentioned individuals attempt rescuing animals in distress, however, it can be very risky and we’ve seen many people who have injured themselves in doing so. Animals are not like humans where they may listen to you when you go to rescue them. Our team is well equipped in safety gear and experienced in handling animals and ensure maximum human safety while conducting rescue. In the end, you need to make sure you are safe and the animal is least stressed or injured during the rescue as well. The cat was physically fit and was happy to be released in a safe location nearby”, said Satarkar.
