Pune, 17th December 2024: The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has launched a drive against underage drivers in various parts of Pune. It has issued a warning that if a minor is found driving during an inspection, the parents of the minor will face either a fine of Rs 25,000 or a prison sentence of up to three years.

In prominent areas of the city, particularly around schools and colleges, children under 18 have been observed riding two-wheelers with engine capacities exceeding 50 cc, carrying multiple passengers, speeding, and honking loudly. These behaviours increase the risk of accidents. To address this, the RTO has initiated an inspection campaign, as confirmed by Swapnil Bhosale, Deputy Regional Transport Officer.

Under the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules of 1989, if a driver under 18 is found operating a vehicle, the owner of the vehicle can be penalized. Additionally, it is illegal for minors to drive vehicles with an engine capacity exceeding 50 cc in public places. If a minor is caught driving, a case will be filed against the vehicle’s owner. Furthermore, parents may face a fine of Rs 25,000 or imprisonment for up to three years.

Deputy RTO Bhosale also stated that complaints have been received about minors driving on major roads as well as near schools and colleges, with incidents involving both boys and girls. This raises concerns about traffic congestion and accidents. As a result, investigations will be carried out against minor drivers.
