Pune, 16th April 2025: The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has launched a drive to enforce the mandatory uniform rule for rickshaw and taxi drivers, following repeated violations of the regulation. Despite being mandated under the Motor Vehicles Act, many drivers continue to operate without wearing the prescribed uniform or carrying required identification and documents.

The inspection drive was announced through a circular issued by Deputy Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale. As per regulations, drivers of auto-rickshaws and taxis are required to wear a white shirt or bush shirt along with khaki trousers. They must also carry a laminated ID card issued by the licensing authority and ensure all vehicle documents are up to date.

However, the RTO has observed widespread non-compliance. To address this, officials will begin conducting random checks to verify uniform adherence, the presence of ID cards, the functionality of fare meters, and the validity of vehicle documents.

Bhosale has urged all rickshaw and taxi drivers to carry their documents and follow the dress code to avoid penalties during the inspections.
Uniform Rule as per Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989:
According to Rule 21, Sub-rule 18 of the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Rules:
A motor cab driver or permit holder must wear a white shirt or bush shirt and khaki trousers while on duty.
A laminated ID card, issued by the licensing authority for ₹50, must be worn on the right side of the chest in the format specified under the Second Schedule of the Rules.
Exemptions from this rule may be granted by the government in cases of emergency or during training.
The enforcement drive is aimed at improving service standards, ensuring passenger safety, and upholding discipline among public transport drivers.
