WhatsApp To Allow Users To Share Longer Video Status Updates Soon
New Delhi, 16th April 2025: WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform owned by Meta, is set to introduce a new feature that will allow users to upload video status updates up to 90 seconds in length. This move comes as part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to enhance user experience and keep pace with evolving content-sharing trends.
The update, currently available to select beta testers, builds upon previous changes that extended the status video limit from 30 seconds to 60 seconds, and now aims to offer users greater freedom and convenience in sharing their stories.
According to WABetaInfo, a portal tracking WhatsApp developments, the new 90-second video status feature is being rolled out gradually to beta users. This upgrade eliminates the need for users to manually split longer videos into multiple parts, streamlining the process and allowing for uninterrupted storytelling.
Beta testers have reported that the extended limit not only improves the overall experience but also enables more creative and clear communication through the status feature. The change is expected to be widely welcomed by users who regularly use WhatsApp Status to share moments and updates with their contacts.
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has confirmed that the feature will be available to all users in the coming weeks. A spokesperson for Meta, Rahul Sharma, Senior Product Manager, said, “We are committed to making WhatsApp a more expressive and user-friendly platform. The new 90-second video status update is designed to give users more flexibility and enhance the way they connect with friends and family.”
The WhatsApp Status feature, first introduced in 2017, allows users to share photos, videos, and GIFs that disappear after 24 hours. Over the years, the platform has adjusted the video length limit several times in response to user feedback and technical considerations. During the COVID-19 lockdown in India, for example, the limit was temporarily reduced to 15 seconds to manage server load as usage spiked. As network infrastructure improved and demand for richer content grew, WhatsApp gradually increased the limit, first to 30 seconds, then to 60 seconds, and now to 90 seconds for select users.
Industry experts believe that this update will help WhatsApp compete more effectively with rival platforms like Instagram and Messenger, which already allow users to post longer video stories. The ability to share longer, uninterrupted videos is expected to benefit content creators, businesses, and everyday users alike, making it easier to convey comprehensive stories and updates.
For now, only beta testers can access the new feature, but Meta has assured that a wider rollout is imminent. Users are advised to keep their app updated to receive the latest features as they become available. With the introduction of 90-second video status updates, WhatsApp continues to evolve as a leading messaging and content-sharing platform, catering to the dynamic needs of its global user base.
According to digital marketing consultant Priya Verma, 29, based in Gurugram, “Longer video statuses will help brands and creators engage more deeply with their audience. It’s a welcome move for anyone who relies on WhatsApp for business or personal storytelling.”
As WhatsApp prepares for the full rollout, users can look forward to a more seamless and expressive way to share their moments, further strengthening the platform’s role in everyday communication.
