Police Recover Rs 10 Lakh From ATM Thieves

Pune, 20th January 2022: The sleuths from the Pune rural police have busted a gang of thieves who targeted ATMs of various banks. Police have recovered Rs 10 lakh out of Rs 23 which they had recently stolen from the Bank of Maharashtra ATM in Yavat.

Addressing a press conference today, Superintendent of Police (Pune rural) Dr Abhinav Deshmukh said that the accused are involved in ATM-related theft cases besides other offences.

The arrested persons have been identified as Ajay Rameshrao Shende (32), a labour contractor from Sahajpur in Daund taluka of Pune district, Shivaji Uttam Garad (25), a labourer from Karanji in Risod taluka of Washim district and Rishikesh Kakasaheb Kirtike (22), a farmer from Deodhanura in Kalamb taluka of Osmanabad district. Their two accomplices are absconding.

On 17th January between 2.30 am to 4.30 am, they used a gas cutter to cut open the Bank of Maharashtra ATM in Yavat on Pune-Solapur road and decamped with Rs 23.8 lakh cash. An FIR was registered in this regard at the Yavat police station.

“We had formed four different teams to nab the accused. One of the teams zeroed on Shende and nabbed him today from Sahajpur and seized Rs 10 lakh from his possession besides a bike used in the crime. Later his two accomplices were also caught”, Deshmukh said.

According to police, Shende is a labour contractor and Kirtike used to come to him for work. Garad had also approached him for work. “With the help of other accomplices, Shende had devised burglary plans to target ATM centres and houses to get easy money. He learnt the tricks from videos on YouTube and had bought required equipment and tools online”, Additional SP Milind Mohite said.

Police said that the accused persons are involved in the following cases also:

1) Attempt to steal cash from State Bank of India ATM at Kurkumbh. Case registered with Daund police station on January 16 this year.

2) Theft of Rs 1.84 lakh and a laptop from a house last year. FIR registered with Washim City police station.

3) Theft of Rs 7.67 lakh from ATM after cutting it with gas cutter last year. Case registered with Gategaon Police Station in Latur.

4) Motorcycle used for committing the crime at Yavat and Kurkumbh were stolen from the jurisdiction of Lonikalbhor police station.

The investigation team included Local Crime Branch (LCB) Police Inspector Ashok Shelke, API Sandip Yele, PSI Amol Gore, Rameshwar Dhondge, ASI Tushar Pandare, and head constables Raju Momin, Ajit Bhujbal, Asif Sheikh, Ajay Ghule, Pramod Navale, Vijay Kanchan, Chandrakant Jadhav, Police Naik Yogesh Nagargoje, Mangesh Thigale, Amol Shedge, Balasaheb Khadke, Prasanna Ghadge, constable Poonam Gund and driver head constable Mukund Kadam.

The team also included Yavat police station’s Police Inspector Narayan Pawar, PSI Sanjay Nagargoje, head constables Guru Gaikwad, Nilesh Kadam, Maruti Barathe, Ramdas Jagtap, Mahendra Chandne.
