Pune, 27th November 2023: In a commendable display of altruism, the Ushahkal Abhinav Institute of Medical Sciences Sangli (UAIMS) conducted a multiorgan donation on November 26. The donor, a 42-year-old male from Sangli, was admitted with intracerebral bleeding on November 23. Identified as the sole breadwinner working as a dairy vendor, the patient’s critical condition prompted his wife to generously consent to the donation of all viable organs.

Following the guidelines, the donor’s liver, both kidneys, heart, and lungs were allocated for transplantation. The transplant teams efficiently retrieved the organs, and a network of green corridors and chartered flights facilitated their swift transportation to hospitals in Pune and Mumbai for transplantation into registered recipients.

The recipients of the transplants are reported to be in good health and stable, marking a successful outcome for the noble initiative.

Expressing gratitude, the UAIMS management conveyed their heartfelt thanks to the donor’s family for their selfless act. The Institute also extended appreciation to Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) Pune, transplant teams, local authorities, the civil surgeon of Sangli, Sangli Police, and all others who played a crucial role in the process.

This event marks a hattrick for the week, with five consecutive donors, active participation from outstation hospitals, and the conversion of the 1st NTORC center into a donor. Maharashtra continues to lead in organ donations, a testament to the generosity of donors and their families.

As of now, ZTCC Pune reports the following waiting list for organ transplants:

– Kidney: 1632
– Liver: 565
– Heart: 40
– Multiviseral: 65
