Pune: Senior Citizen Duped of Rs 4 Lakh in Cyber Fraud Using APK File

Sahakarnagar, 14th February 2025: Cybercriminals have struck again, this time targeting a 77-year-old senior citizen from the Sahakarnagar area. The victim lost ₹4 lakh after unknowingly installing a malicious APK file sent by an unknown sender. A case has been registered under the Information Technology Act at the Sahakarnagar Police Station.
According to police reports, the senior citizen received a call from an unknown number. The caller posed as a customer service representative from a private company and claimed that there were issues with the victim’s bank account. The fraudster then convinced him to download a special file to “resolve” the problem.
As soon as the victim opened the file, cybercriminals gained access to the mobile number linked to his bank account. Within moments, ₹4 lakh was withdrawn from his account. Upon receiving transaction alerts, the victim realized he had been scammed and immediately approached the police.
Police Inspector Amol More from the Crime Branch, who is investigating the case, has urged citizens to remain cautious. The police have issued the following advisory:
Do not respond to calls, messages, or links from unknown numbers.
Never download APK files or other attachments from unverified sources.
Always use contact numbers from official websites when reaching out to banks or customer service centers.
Immediately report any suspicious transactions to your bank and the police.
Enable additional security measures for mobile and internet banking.
With cyber fraud incidents on the rise, authorities have emphasized the importance of verifying any requests before taking action. The police have urged the public to exercise caution and avoid falling prey to such scams.
