Khadakwasla, 30th May 2023: At present 7.01 TMC water storage is available in the Khadakwasla dam project which supplies water to the city. Hanumant Gunale, Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department, explained that since this water storage is 0.73 TMC extra compared to last year, about fifteen days of water storage is currently available in the dams for the people of Pune. Meanwhile, the Water Resources Department has appealed to use water sparingly.

Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon, and Temghar all four dams of the Khadakwasla chain project received satisfactory rainfall last year. So the stock in the dam was also good. Therefore, after providing water for agricultural rotation and drinking water in the rural areas of the district, now 7.01 TMC (24 per cent) of water is available in the Khadakwasla chain project at the end of May.

On the same day last year, there was 6.28 TMC (21.56 per cent) water storage in the dams. Therefore, the water storage at the end of 30th May is about 0.73 TMC more than last year’s water storage. In other words, compared to last year, this year water resources are available for about 15 days extra.

Currently, the fifth cycle of agriculture is going on and it will continue till 15th June. 1,600 cusecs of water are released daily from an agricultural cycle. Two more TMC water will be released for this purpose. Also, water will be released for the Palkhi in the next few days. Therefore, out of the remaining four TMCs, the rural areas which are close to the canal will have to release drinking water. Therefore, about three TMCs of water storage will remain.

Accordingly, after 19th June, a decision will have to be taken regarding drinking water. This water storage will be sufficient for about two months. Due to this, water supply can be done till the end of July, officials informed.
