Pune, 7th June 2021: In these testing times of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the crimes against women have increased rapidly. Keeping women’s safety in mind, the Ninebee Foundation has started an initiative in Pune called ‘Stree Safe’, which is a free ambulance service run by an all-female staff.

“Ladies were asked for disrespectful favours in exchange for emergency medical services. It was shocking to know about cases of rape, even in ambulances. During our research, we got to know that there were many such cases even beyond the official numbers which never got reported. Thereafter, we immediately felt a need to find a solution to this problem,” said Project Head Guneet Kaur.

The foundation came up with an idea to commence its ambulance services. This led to the beginning of the ‘Stree Safe’ initiative where the ambulance consist of an all-female team starting from the drivers and attendants to the backend team of doctors.

The service is free of cost and is meant exclusively for females for the cases where the patient is alone and is a lady, or some patient is being accompanied by a lady who is alone. The ambulance comes equipped with first aid kits and an oxygen supply. The driver is trained on medical aid and is also given training on self-defence and martial arts.

“Our only aim was to find an immediate solution to this horrendous situation. Our goal was to help people in these difficult times when people were already going through so much trauma both mentally and financially,” said Ninebee Foundation Founder and Director Amarpreet Singh.

The initiative started a few weeks back and is serving in localities between Camp and Hadapsar with one ambulance. However, the foundation is planning to expand and add more ambulances in the coming days. An online campaign on the platform ‘Milaap’ is also being run by team members Nimarjeet Kaur and Priya Sathyanarayanan to raise funds for the cause so that more ambulances can be procured.
