Pune: Surge in Jewelry Thefts on PMPML Buses Alarms Commuters
Sangvi, 25th September 2023: A recent wave of jewelry thefts targeting female passengers on Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) buses has heightened concerns among commuters. The incidents have fueled speculation that an organized theft ring may be active, particularly in the Navi Sangvi area. The latest theft, involving a gold necklace valued at Rs 45,000, has prompted an ongoing police investigation.
On September 17, a woman was traveling on a PMPML bus through Navi Sangvi when thieves managed to steal approximately 15 grams of her gold jewelry. She filed an official complaint at the Sangvi Police Station on September 24, triggering a law enforcement probe into the incidents.
Preliminary findings from the police investigation reveal that the bus was crowded when the theft took place. The perpetrators seized the opportunity presented by the congested conditions to swiftly remove a 14-gram gold necklace from the victim’s neck, valued at Rs 45,000.
In light of these incidents, local authorities are urging commuters to exercise increased vigilance while using public transportation. Women are specifically advised to avoid wearing jewelry that could make them targets for theft.
Sangvi police are actively following leads and conducting investigations to identify and apprehend those responsible for the thefts. Their efforts aim to mitigate such incidents and ensure the safety and security of passengers on PMPML buses.
