Pune, 14th April 2025: After years of delays, the long-pending Swargate to Katraj underground metro project in Pune is finally set to begin within the next few months. The Maharashtra state government has approved ₹683 crore in additional funding for two newly proposed stations—Balajinagar and Bibwewadi—which were not part of the original plan.

The 5.46 km underground metro line, being implemented by Maha Metro, was initially proposed with just three stations: Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj. However, following strong public demand and political support, two more stations were suggested. Although the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) gave its approval, it had declined to fund the expansion, stalling the project.

With the state government stepping in to cover the additional cost, the project has now received the green light. Maha Metro has floated fresh tenders that include all five stations. These will remain open for 40 days, after which bids will be evaluated. Work is likely to commence within 3 to 4 months, officials said.

Hemant Sonawane, Executive Director of Maha Metro, confirmed, “The state government will bear the additional cost for the two extra stations in the Swargate-Katraj metro project. With five stations in total, fresh tenders have been issued. The work is expected to begin in the next 2–3 months.”

The upgraded metro stretch will now cost over ₹4,300 crore and is expected to take approximately four years to complete. The project aims to significantly reduce traffic congestion in central and southern Pune, including areas like Swargate, Bibwewadi, and Katraj.
