Pune: This Year’s Diwali Resulted In Heavy Smoke; Pollution Reached All-Time High
Pune, 25th October 2022: A big increase in air pollution has been seen in Pune during Diwali. On the occasion of Lakshmi Puja, a huge number of firecrackers were set off in Pune. Hence, the highest figures in the last three years have been recorded today.
According to the records by Safar organisation this year, the average fine particulate matter in the air for the first two days of Diwali was in the ‘satisfactory air’ category. However, the level of fine particles has reached 210 (Air Quality Index) from 12.00 am last night to 9.00 am today. For the last two years, the average level was 50 to 100 on the day of Lakshmi Puja.
The amount of PM 2.5 and PM 10 (particulate matter) in the air is monitored continuously. Accordingly, a fine particle level of up to 100 is considered optimal. Then 100 to 200 is satisfactory, 200 to 300 is bad, 300 to 400 is very bad, and 400 to 500 is considered to be very dangerous.
According to Safar, this figure has gone up due to the lack of rain this year and fireworks being set off in large numbers.
