Pune to Get 54 km of Underground Roads as PMC Tackles Space Crunch

Pune, 24th January 2026: With road widening no longer possible and a lack of space ruling out new flyovers and underpasses, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to develop an underground road network of nearly 54 km to tackle the city’s growing traffic congestion.

Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishor Ram said the project will be implemented by the PMC, alongside efforts to strengthen the Metro and PMPML public transport systems.

Earlier, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) was expected to prepare the project blueprint. However, since the proposed underground corridors will pass through city limits, the PMC has chosen to handle the planning and execution itself. Ram said an internationally experienced consultant will be appointed next month, and a detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared within four months.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had earlier announced the development of underground roads to ease traffic congestion in Pune, including the Yerwada–Katraj tunnel being undertaken by PMRDA. Proposals for additional underground corridors along key routes such as Shaniwarwada–Swargate, Bajirao Road and Shivaji Road are also under discussion.

However, the municipal commissioner said any underground road project must be based on a detailed traffic study focused on city needs. He pointed out that the Yerwada–Katraj tunnel may not significantly reduce congestion and stressed that shorter routes connecting high-traffic areas would be more effective in easing bottlenecks.

Ram said the PMC will inform the state government of its stand and appoint a consultant with international experience in similar projects. He added that while a preliminary plan prepared by a local firm exists, it requires major improvements.

The project will receive financial support from the state government, ensuring that the PMC does not face a heavy financial burden. The civic body will propose the project in both the state and central government budgets, and Ram expressed confidence that Pune would secure substantial funding for the underground road network.
