Pune, 19th May 2023: In an effort to raise awareness about helmet usage and enhance road safety, Pune district will commemorate ‘Symbolic Helmet Day’ on May 24. As part of this initiative, it is now mandatory for government and semi-government officials, employees of corporations, municipal bodies, schools, colleges, and other institutions who commute on two-wheelers to wear helmets while traveling to their workplaces.

The announcement was made by Dr. Rajesh Deshmukh, the Collector of Pune District. India witnesses approximately 411 road accident-related fatalities each day, with nearly 80% of the victims comprising cyclists, pedestrians, and motorcyclists. Wearing a helmet can significantly increase the chances of survival in a two-wheeler accident by up to 80%.

Under the Motor Vehicle Act, individuals aged four and above are required to wear helmets while riding a two-wheeler. The ongoing 7th UN Global Road Safety Week, which focuses on sustainable transport, is being observed globally from May 15 to May 21. The aim of this week is to garner the support of NGOs, government agencies, media, and citizens to strengthen road accident prevention efforts.

As per Section 129 of the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988, along with directives issued by the High Court and the Supreme Court, wearing helmets is mandatory for both riders and pillion riders on two-wheelers in public places across India. In light of this, the ‘Symbolic Helmet Day’ has been designated during this week to raise public awareness. It has been emphasized that heads of offices should ensure that employees who commute on two-wheelers wear helmets. Failure to comply with the helmet rule may result in penalties under the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988.
