Pune: Traffic Diversion Near Shastrinagar Chowk Causes Confusion, Residents Demand Safety Measures

Yerwada, 11th March 2025: The recent traffic diversion at Shastrinagar Chowk on Nagar Road, which shifted the entry to Kalyaninagar approximately 700 meters ahead, has left many commuters frustrated and concerned about safety. Residents have reported multiple near-miss incidents and two minor accidents since the change was implemented last week.

The Pune Traffic Branch blocked the original entry to Kalyaninagar without prior notice, forcing commuters to travel further and take a U-turn near Aga Khan Palace. However, the new diversion has led to risky maneuvers, as vehicles speeding from Ramwadi towards Yerawada pose a hazard to those turning left into Kalyaninagar.
A local resident who was involved in a minor accident at the U-turn criticized the lack of warning signs. “A cab came at high speed from Ramwadi and did not slow down while I was making the turn. It hit my car, causing damage. There should be proper indicators to guide vehicles at the U-turn,” she said.

Another resident questioned the logic behind the decision. “Blocking a major entry point to Kalyaninagar from the highway is causing congestion for hundreds of meters on either side. It doesn’t make sense,” he said.

“The constant movement of vehicles towards Kalyaninagar from Nagar Road and those taking sudden U-turns in the evening create a hazardous situation. If this arrangement is going to continue, proper barricades or traffic personnel should be deployed to prevent wrong-side turns,” he suggested.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Amol Zende stated that the modification was part of a trial initiative to ease congestion along Nagar Road. “Within two days, we observed a significant reduction in traffic bottlenecks. The original Shastrinagar entry to Kalyaninagar was used by only 15% to 20% of vehicles,” he explained.

He further clarified that the new system eliminates the need for a right turn at Shastrinagar. “Instead of waiting at the junction, commuters can continue straight, take a U-turn 700 meters ahead, and then turn left into Kalyaninagar,” he said.

According to Zende, similar arrangements have been implemented up to Chandannagar, helping to clear congestion near Sahyadri Hospital lane. “The plan is to extend this setup, and eventually, when the flyover and grade separator are constructed, the right turn at Shastrinagar will be permanently closed,” he added.

The traffic department has assured that they will continue monitoring the situation and make necessary adjustments to enhance road safety.
